Little Daytona

Daytona models to build

There are many kits to build both Spyders and Berlinettas.

Italieri make a detailed standard spyder and a racing berlinetta in 1:24 scale. Their product codes are 665 and 669 respectively.
Revell make a spyder model too but it was licensed from Monogram and was a model of the Miami Vice Daytona which, being a McBernie Corvette has a V8 engine, standard door handles, no quarterlights and Corvette seats and is clearly not the Ferrari 365GTS it claims, I am surprised Ferrari allowed this to sell!

The nicest, most detailed kits are by Fujimi in 1:24 scale. They make a production spyder and berlinetta and the Daytona Speciale which was a car built for Steve McQueen featuring a hard top spyder in light metallic powder blue and silver with an elongated boot section. Unfortunately where the picture on the front clearly shows an elongated boot the body within isn't, it is the standard spyder model with a hard top!

All feature an extremely well detailed engine complete with stand so it can be displayed seperately if desired.

Airfix have recently produced a berlinetta which will probably be well made too.

Crown produced a motorised berlinetta car.

All types of model are available on ebay at very keen prices. Many of the models mentioned here are no longer available in the shops but, thanks to ebay they are still accessible.

Daytona Spyder by Monogram
Possibly the least accurate model, although a nicely built kit, is one by Monogram which is a spyder but it has no door quarterlights, conventional door handles  and the engine appears to be a V8 not the V12 quad cam that the original had suggesting it is a model of the McBurnie copy!
I suspect it is a repackaged Miami Vice car, see below.

Revell Daytona Berlinetta
This is a nicely created plastic model of the Daytona Berlinetta. There is usually one on ebay for between £12 and £15.00.

Miami Vice car by Monogram

On the back of the really successful TV show featuring Don Johnson in the 80's Monogram produced a model of the car he used in the first series. They were fooled too as they describe it as a Ferrari Daytona when it was a replica built on a Corvette chassis called a Mc Burnie, I am unaware of the thoughts of Enzo Ferrari regarding this error! But it may have contributed to the action taken allegedly by Ferrari to stop the replica makers.
They also produced a 'standard' car which is the same one but in red as mentioned in the previous paragraph.

It is detailed with engine and gearbox and full exhaust system.

Crown motorised Daytona Berlinetta
Produced in the 80's this is the only model I know that was motorised. It is in 1:24 scale which is also unusual. Once again it is very detailed and nicely made, typically Japanese.

Daytona models to buy. Carlo Brianza ,Kyosho

Carlo Brianza
When Ferrari produce a model Carlo Brianza, an Italian, also produces it but in miniature. The first model he ever made for sale was the Daytona. He built both spyder and berlinetta cars in 1:14th scale and over 30 cms long. They are good quality models and are collected. Expect to pay around £1,000 for a nice one. They feature well detailed engine bays and interiors with opening doors and bonnet. His son has now taken over where he left off and continues producing models. They can be found at www.abcbrianza.it.

Having examined two examples of these models in detail up close I personally think the Kyoshi car is a better bet as it is more detailed taking advantage of production advances that have developed since then. The Kyoshi car is a fraction of the cost too. It is just a pity they are not permitted to make a Spyder version as Mattel already produce one but it isn't anything like as accurate and detailed as its Kyosho cousin, but at a third of the price it is difficult to be picky. The scale of the Kyosho is smaller than the Brianza car.

Take a look at this site. Here is to be found a place where for $5995 Canadian you can have made an eighth scale Daytona Berlinetta. Take a look at the pictures taken from the site. They haven't got to the spyder yet but when they do they will be doing it justice!

Giodi Daytona Spyder

This is an excellent model produced by Italians just like the real thing!

Giodi Daytona Berlinetta

Here it is in standard production form. Well presented and excellent in detail.

Giodi Daytona models (Italian)
Image 1

Giodi make a fine models of spyder Berlinetta and No22 Competition cars. Like all the others watch out for them on ebay as they come through from time to time. All will be more valuable in time.

Rio and Verem
These two companies make very nice berlinettas too. Verem in a wide variety of colours. The cars are in 1:43 scale. The car pictured is a Rio model.

Other Daytona models to buy

Having been around since 1967 there are many models of both Daytona Berlinetta and Spyder.
Mattel recently bought the licence to produce models of the range of Ferrari cars. They produce an acceptable spyder model in yellow and red with either spoke or aluminum wheels in 1:18th scale. It can be bought for around £15-00. There is lots of detail in both the interior and the engine bay, though nothing like as accurate as that of the Kyosho cars.

A disappointment of both the Mattel and the Kyosho cars are that they have black interiors. The best, and most valuable actual cars are Rosso red with 'crema' leather interiors.
Many owners of the real cars chose black as 'crema' shows the marks, this isn't an issue for the model makers though.

The 1:43 scale 'Detailcars' are very nice. The berlinetta, in silver, code is ART.282 and the spyder in metallic powder blue is ART.285.

Even Shell with their Classico range from Corgi produced a nearly nice spyder in a small scale. Chromed alloys and a lack of paint detailing detract from the overall nicely put together model.
If you know of other models I have missed please email and let me know about them.

There is also a nice 1:43 scale model of the Daytona Speciale built for Steve McQueen also from Detailcars.

Kyosho Daytona Berlinetta

These are the most detailed built models available of the Daytona Berlinetta. The quality even puts the cars of Carlo Brianza to shame despite them being 1:18th scale.
There are three cars in the range covering the entire production of the Daytona Berlinetta. There is a 1969 plexiglass fronted car, a 1971 'pop up' headlight model available in black, red and yellow all with black interiors and the Paul Newman Le Mans racing car. Most recently the Thomson 1972 Daytona Competizione has been added to the range. There have been further additions of racing Daytonas since, all superbly detailed.

Aside from having individual plug leads they have detailed battery terminals, fuse box and features all the engine bay decals of the original. The boot is fabric lined. The only omission I could suggest is the tool role of the original and tools! This leaves the true perfectionists something to occupy them.
Whilst it is available in Red, Black and Yellow most shops only stock the red. The black and yellow can be ordered though!
It is available from good model shops for around £45.00, another benefit over the models of Brianza which can be north of £750 and are very old now!
These models appear to be growing in value as they should be for their attention to detail.

Kyosho now also produce 1:64th scale models of the berlinetta whcih are also very nicely put together but are too small to be really appreciated..

Sadly Mattel, who I believe hold the licence for all Ferrari models, produce what is clearly an inferior spyder model, but as it is less than half the price, you get what you pay for ,and consequently probably won't licence a spyder by them.

Another curiosity of the Mattel spyder is the engine which features carburettors with chromed trumpets pointing straight up. The production car had a large air filter assembly that completely covered the six weber carburettors and made the engine bay rather dull in comparison, I guess they felt the engine bay deserved a bit of flair.
I suspect modelmakers will be chopping the tops off the Kyosho coupe models to make spyder models from them some time soon.

Whatever the Kyosho cars are future collectors cars undoubtedly so save all boxes and packing for then!

Model life imitating real life!

Kyosho 'Pop-ups' car

From 1971, thanks to the work of Ralph Nader for the NSA (National Safety Association) in America all car ride heights and headlight heights were raised. With a supercar such as this capable of travelling at close to 170 mph it would have been very unsafe to raise the car to achieve these new heights.
Pininfarina cleverly redesigned the headlight array so the lights, assembled into pods, were raised up, to the new required height, when required at night etc. thereby retaining the shape and look until dark. Many also chose to have small sidelight units,  to avoid having to raise the lights until the last possible moment they were also used as reversing lights when fitted at the rear.

So from 1971 the pop-up headlight model replaced the 'plexiglass' original design. The original show spyder also had plexiglass but they were only ever produced as  'pop ups' car.

Some plexiglass cars, such as Evil Knievels, were converted to spyders years later on though.

The Le Mans Thomson Daytona Competitzione winner of Le Mans in 1973

By Kyosho this is an accurate and faithful replica of this remarkable car. It is already collectable and even on ebay is generally listed at over £60 as its starting price. It comes really well boxed with an actual size picture on the outer. The car is encased in a poly box to ensure its safe keeping.

It is a fine quality representation of the Le Mans winning car.

There is now a range of Competizione Daytona from Kyosho. All are suberply detailed and now changing hands for around £80 each having only retailed for £50!

The Kyosho 'Paul Newman' Le Mans car

This is a beautifully presented and constructed model of an actual Le Mans race car. It features the engine bay of the actual car with very intricate detailing etc. and the additional detailing inside the car such as fire extinguisher and racing seat belts.
In the boot is the correct fuel filler etc.

The bodywork is much more functional than the production car but is consequently less pleasing to the eye. It did however enjoy great success on the track from 1972 particularly in endurance type races and long after production had ceased.
Demand for this car has outstripped supply but can be ordered from such as www.modelenium.co.uk.

I am sure that, 20 years from know the Kyosho Daytona's will be valuable and sought after by collectors.

The engine bay
In this picture of the model the detail can be really appreciated. The radiator cap and extensive pipework as well as the twin orange oil filters. The battery features are also complete along with battery terminals and individual plug leads. The gas struts that hold the bonnet open are also exact miniatures.

1:43rd scale models.
In this scale there are some very well detailed spyders and berlinettas as well as most of the race Daytona's such as the Thomson and JCB cars. The detail is excellent and they come in their own showcases. Definately to be recommended and once again, available on ebay cheaply.

Fly Le Mans Daytona Competizione
The detail on these cars is brilliant. Each is a true representation of the cars that raced and those that won at Le Mans. The Thompson car is typical of this. All Fly cars are limited run so all are very collectable. There are a number of Racing Daytona in the range and all are representations of genuine cars that raced! Ebay usually have a couple at any given time. They can be got buy it now delivered for around £30 or can be bid for costing around £20.

Famous Pozzi Le Mans winning car

Charles Pozzi was the French importer of Ferrari. He had a lot of success with Daytonas at Le Mans. This car and the Thomson car were both winners there.

Another fantastic, brilliantly finished Daytona Competition

The finish and quality of Fly cars are incredible. They aren't just a slot car, they are a brilliantly detailed model car in their own right!

Fly, the best slot cars available incredibly detailed art forms
The Fly range of slot cars are superb. They only make so many of each so they are collectors items. On th track they are truly amazing as they feature a strong magnet at the rear of the car ensuring that they hold the track better than such as Scalextric cars. They have produced lots of the Le Mans cars as well as road cars too. Get on ebay and choose one! They come in their own showcase and are brilliant!

Fly Race Daytona Berlinetta
Fly make exceptionally detailed model slot cars. They are beautifully finished and stick to the track like glue. This particular car is one of the Daytonas raced very successfully at Daytona and elsewhere. Cost is usually around £38-00 but they are well worth the cost. They can also be sourced on ebay from anything from £20 to £30. Only limites numbers are made of each car so they will appreciate in value as they age.See www.slotcity.co.uk.

Anniversary MiniAuto Daytona brilliant colour scheme

To celebrate their 10th anniversary Fly produced a Mini Autos series of slot cars. This is one of the Daytona cars in this series. It comes superbly boxed and will undoubtedly be a collectors item in the future.

Fly did a few special edition boxed series often with 2 cars. This is the set of the Pozzi Thomson cars, one of which won at Le Mans. They are superbly packaged and are an excellent addition to any serious slot car enthusiast. Available on ebay for around £45, when you can pay £30 for one car this is a bargain!

Books on the Daytona

There have been many books written about the Daytona over the last 33 years. Some are out of print and quite valuable such as Daytona by Rouse and Braden.
There are also a number of magazines which often feature the Daytona such as Forza.
The most recently produced book which has a good section on the Daytona is 'Original Ferrari V12 1965-1973' by Keith Bluemel

Here is a list of a few of the better ones for those who wish to read more about this remarkable car.

'Daytona' by Pat Braden and Gerald Rouse

This is probably the definitive guide to the Berlinetta marque. There is information about the car and the prototypes with a chapter on the car in competition. There is also a comprehensive list of the chassis numbers, which were spyders and which, that they were aware of then, had been converted to spyders.
It covers the various car options of the time, the origin of the name and also information about the 'converters' of coupe's to spyders.
It isn't as informative regarding the spyder versions but is extremely detailed elsewhere.

It is out of print and valuations are around £250 each though so E-Bay might be the place to go to get a copy. I have seen one sell there for less than £50.

Ferrari Daytona Super Profile by Nathan Beehl
Ferrari Daytona Super Profile.  Nathan Beehl  Published by Haynes in 1986  @ £25.00   ISBN 0-86255-032-7. This is mainly about the spyder version and features extensively and in detail one of the seven right hand drive spyder models which was sold in 1989 twice for £1.6 million!
It also includes road tests, a good history of the marque including its racing pedigree and interesting pictures of work being done building them in the factory as well as images of coupes and other spyders.
There is no information about the prototypes and little about the berlinetta version which lead to the creation of the car, the specials are not covered either.

Original Ferrari V12 1965-1973 by Keith Bluemel
This book covers all the V12 cars between 1965 and 1973 and so has a large section on the Daytona and its derivatives and specials. It is a worthy addition to a Daytona fans library. It includes such details as all the colours the car was available in, something around 50 different shades. It lists all the itmes in the tool kit and much, much more.

Ferrari Daytona in Competition
Image 1

This is a quality book, now out of print. It can be bought on ebay for around £50 delivered. It goes in depth about all the 15 competition cars produced for racing from 1968 on. Amazingly it was not until the car had gone out of production in 1973 that all the success began to arrive! A great read and reference book.

Ferrari Daytona Berlinetta by Crown of Japan
Crown Daytona

This is quite a rare model. For some weird reason Crown made the car pale blue in this packaging, it is red elsewhere! Can't have helped sales I would have thought! Unusually it features an electric motor to power it.

Curiously the kit also includes a racing driver and it is a normal saloon!

Mattel Hot Wheels Daytona Berlinetta Competizione
Image 1

This is a nice, detailed 1:43 scale competition Daytona made by Mattel under the Hot Wheels brand. Picked up on ebay for less than £6.00!
